 In the Marvel universe, when does She-Hulk take place? We now have a fair notion of when the upcoming Disney Plus show is set, thanks to chief writer Jessica Gao.

Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), the cousin of Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), is the main character of this series. After an accidental blood transfusion from a car accident, she gains Bruce's enormous, green talents and must learn to reconcile them with her professional life as a lawyer. In addition to Maslany and Ruffalo, She-Hulk features performances from Jameela Jamil as Titania, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tim Roth as Abomination, and Charlie Cox as Daredevil.

When Titania (Jameela Jamil), a Big Bird-like supervillain, storms into the courtroom, Maslany is as entertaining as ever in her few human moments before she morphs into her Hulk half.

It's time to get this thing done. Ginger, Jennifer's best friend and a paralegal, urges her to help. Jennifer has been transformed into a 6-foot-7 green mutant, and she now has to go shopping for a new wardrobe because her chic blazer and sensible heels no longer fit her. After the jury cheers her on for sending Titania packing, she drops a grin-inducing comment about being ready to offer her closing arguments. It's entertaining, mostly delightfully stupid, and a little bit thrilling. After that, things will only get worse.


I should clarify that only the first four of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's nine episodes were made available to the press. There’s a chance that things could pick up by the time the show wraps up its first season in mid-October. But what I did see just became worse and worse, to the point where I began to worry that there was a gas leak somewhere in my apartment building.

After a dragging but necessary amount of flashback exposition that finds Jennifer and her cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) in Mexico trying to ascertain the level of Jennifer’s newfound powers—Hulkability is apparently a bloodborne genetic disease, who knew!—the show throws her back into the world of Los Angeles law. Except that, following her little courtroom stunt, she’s become a liability to her firm and is cut loose.

She-Hulk received four stars from Empire, which stated of the show, "Laugh-out-loud humorous, packed with interesting themes, and just an all-round good time, She-Hulk breaks new ground for Marvel's TV shows – and is one of their best small-screen offerings yet."

The Hollywood Reporter wasn't quite as positive, saying, "It kind of is a cameo-of-the-week show — one that isn't without joys as long as you're not allergic to absurdity."Variety gives the adaptation a positive review, but notes that it is "outdated" and that it is "a show that seeks both to separate apart from the studio's formidable film series and to embrace enough of its hallmarks to keep fans committed."

According to IndieWire, "She-Hulk isn't yet fantastic, but it excels at taking something known and demolishing it," and they predict that the remaining five episodes will show the show's real potential.Despite its flaws, She-Hulk is nonetheless enjoyable, according to The Verge: "when everything comes together, the programme is able to get by relying on its irreverent sense of humour and capacity to laugh at itself."

"Maslany remains one of the most fascinating performers around, constantly elevating whatever material she is given," writes USA Today. When the show embraces its ridiculousness, it succeeds on many levels. It fails when it tries to do too much at once.
